What is Moomin?
The Moomins are the central characters in a Finnish book series (first published in 1945) and comic strip illustrated by Tove Jansson. They live together in a house in Moominvalley and enjoy adventuring with their many friends!
I grew up being very aware of Moomin, but didn't know much about it until a few years ago. As of 2025 I have the first in the Complete Comic Strip series, and the first of the chapter books (A Comet In Moominland). I also adore the 90s TV show! This summer I am hoping to visit Moominvalley Park in 埼玉. My favorite thing about Moomin is how long it has been around, yet it continues to grow more and more fans!

Tove Jansson is born
1935
Jansson studies art in Finland and begins making Moomintroll paintings
1945
The first Moomin story is published in Swedish – The Moomins & the Great Flood
1946
The second Moomin book: A Comet In Moominland is published in Swedish. It is considered to be the first in the series.
1948
Finn Family Moomintroll is published in Swedish and in English, and marketed as the first in the series until the 80s
1950
The Exploits of Moominpappa is published
1952
'The book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My' is published as the first Moomin picture book.
1954
The world's largest newspaper: London's The Evening News, begins publishing the Moomin comic strip. It continues until 1974, with Tove's brother Lars Jansson taking over in 1960.
1954
Moominsummer Madness, the fifth in the series is published.
1957
Moominland Winter is published as the 6th book in the series. It has a darker undertone compared to the earlier books.
1960
Who Will Comfort Toffle? is published as the second Moomin picture book.
1962
Tales from Moomin Valley is published, the 7th in the series. It is a collection of short stories.
1965
Moominpappa at Sea is published, the eighth book in the series.
1969
Fuji TV Zuiyo Enterprises produces an animated Moomin series in Japan.
1969
The Swedish TV produces a series called Mumintrollet (Moomintroll)
1970
The last Moomin novel, Moominvalley in November, is published.
1977
The Dangerous Journey, a children's picture book, is published.
1990
Telecable produces 104 Moomin animations which are sold to over 60 countries.
1993
Moominworld theme park opens in Naantali, Finland.

Tove Jansson passes away.
2006
Draw Quarterly publishes a collection of the Moomin comic strip in English
2019
A new 2D/3D Moominvalley TV series premieres worldwide.
